A further investigation gave this answer.

How freezer plastics can cause fuel-like odors

Older freezers (and some newer ones) use plastic liners and insulation foams that can slowly release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) over time. This process is called outgassing.

These VOCs can:

  • Smell like diesel, kerosene, oil, or solvents
  • Be absorbed easily by fats and oils in food (meat, butter, bread, baked goods)
  • Linger even when the freezer itself doesn’t smell very strong

Common sources inside a freezer:

  • ABS or polystyrene plastic liners
  • Polyurethane foam insulation
  • Aging adhesives or sealants
  • Plasticizers breaking down with age and temperature cycling
