Jay,
They may be non-profit, but they can probably pay leadership well. Google shows they make what I would call "pretty good" money. I realize some would laugh at their salaries plus comps, but it doesn't look bad for a non-physical job.
The Red Cross is also non-profit & their CEO makes somewhere between $700K & 1 Mil. in salary + comps.
You are right Ron, they have to pay the CEO a comparable wage or he/she would go to work elsewhere. Since you mention Red Cross, which I believe is a pretty good organization, I will compare the two:
Red Cross $3.8 Billion in revenue in 2024. The executives (includes CEO) pay was 0.2% of that which is reported at $6,873,699 . The CEO made $1,296,862. Source: https://projects.propublica.org/nonprofits/organizations/530196605
CHM had $755 million in revenue in 2024. The executives pay was 0.1% ($1,034,017). The CEO made $538,864. Source: https://projects.propublica.org/nonprofits/organizations/341964742
Just for fun, now look at the "Humane World for Animals" non-profit which was formally known as "The Humane Society of the United States": https://projects.propublica.org/nonprofits/organizations/530225390 Their revenue was around $208 million in 2024. Their executives received 1.8% of that ($3,427,926). But their biggest expense was "other salaries" which took 27% of their total income! Now add their "fundraising fees" and 31% of their income is gone before even one animal is helped! | |
