North Central Kansas | We toured a farm in Germany in 2017 that had methane digesters. They belonged to our exchange student Johannes's uncle. He raised turkeys in two confinement barns. He mixed the turkey litter along with manure from some local dairies and a hog facility. They also added a lot of corn silage into the digester. This I found to be strange. They had two huge bunker silos filled with corn silage. They had two generators on the farm and one in the local village that they piped methane to. The only way it was economically feasible was that the government was buying the electricity from them at a higher rate. They were near the end of their contracts and were concerned that the price would be lowered. I know they are still using them as Johannes went home to help with silage harvest this fall. Germany does not have its own oil or gas supplies and relies heavily on Russian gas and oil.
All of their buildings had solar panels as well. that subsidized the farm. He farmed around 500 acres. He had two newer Fendt Vario 700 series tractor and a new Class combine. | |
