Who has been farming it and why are they not continuing to farm it ……that needs to be the first question answered.
Yes, this is important. All my acres are organic or in transition. I've passed opportunities to rent farms with 10+ years of certified organic history due to a combination of distance and weed seedbank. It's not as though what I do farm doesn't have any weed seeds out there, but there's a big difference between what I have and a farm that'll come up solid thistle, giant ragweed, and cocklebur.
One other thing is without records and/or a signed affidavit from the previous operator it won't be eligible for organic certification. If taking on a new lease and counting on the organic certification immediately there'd better be verifications up front or a compensatory clause if they aren't provided in time. |
