So, are you able to pay the 5 and 6 figure bills out of pocket of a major illness happens? And are you confident you will be reimbursed? The idea intrigues me but from people ive talked to i am not that confident
Hospitals and doctors are used to waiting for payments from insurance. Insurance companies do not pay them as soon as the bill comes in. They get the bill and then negotiations begin. Claims are denied. Bills are recalculated. It goes on for months. The 3 D's of insurance are “delay, deny, and defend.”
With self-pay, the hospitals/doctors that I have dealt with are always willing to wait for payment for several months. If you can't come up with the money all at once, they have always offered payment plans to me. In talking with them, they will offer to take $xxx per month for X months. OR they offer a significant discount if you pay it all by a certain date. Or a combination of lump sum and payments. You would be amazed at how glad they are to not have to deal with insurance. And they probably end up with more in their pocket with self-pay than waiting on insurance. |
