I could write volumes about what I think about the portal and NIL but I won't because I don't have the energy or interest, my interest in college sports is gradually falling. Skimming the posts in this thread I find it interesting that the posters from Ohio and Alabama love it, the rest not so much. The bottom line the big dog is going to eat the rest of us will be left with scraps.
Which is the way it's been for decades.
Each school has it's own measure of what success is, for some it's winning the national championship, for other schools it's a conference championship and making the big dance, for the bottom rung schools it might be a winning season and getting out of the conference cellar. Making that climb is like a staircase, a successful athletic department is always taking a step up, hiring a great coach, recruiting better athletes, better athletic facilities. Today under the current rules all that building and success can disappear when the bigger dog shows up to take your coach and roster, and there is always a bigger dog. For us SDSU fans last year the bigger dog was Washington State. for wazzou this year it's Iowa State, for ISU it's Penn State. There is something like 360+ schools in NCAA division I athletics, it's not all about schools like Alabama and Ohio State in football or Kentucky or North Carolina in mens basketball. Without rules in place insuring some sort of fairness and competitive balance so each school can achieve its own level of success sports becomes bland and kind of ho-hum.
