| Short version: I am talking Cow/calf NOT feedig out young cattle, aren't we by worming our cows selecting for the toughest parisites and giving a crutch to inferior cow genetics?
Long version: 6-8 years ago I had the previoiusn fall used Cydection on the herd, mainly to clean-up the lice. Vet was out for bull checks and he asked "did you treat everyone" I well of course, he said "you should be skipping the cattle that are slick and shiney as a refuge in order to not breed super parasites. I said well I only do it every 3-5 years, but it got me started to thinking so I did some resaerch, found one source that said by worming you are only killing maybe 80% of worms. I did not think I really had a tremendous internal parasite issue, cows are rotationally grazed on a 6-8 week rotation, moved daily etc. This fall we listened to a vet talk about worming and now apparently there is a reccommendation that when you worm cattle you should use a wormer from all 3 classes of wormers at full strength, REALLY!!!! I personally have never noticed a huge change by worming in my cows apprances , just how will this be cost effective for any one other then the drug companies? To me it looks like a Hail Mary Pass because we have bred super parasites (think Round -up resistant weeds) and have no new technology (wormer classes) in the pipeline. Fire away! again I said for cow/breeding stock, in a feed lot one probably/maybe can see a return on the costs. | |
