Plant as early as possible. Earliest we have been able to get across field was March 8th a few years ago. They are cold tolerant, it has been down to 8 degrees after planting and had no issues. Early planting gets the oats ahead of weeds and generally better quality the sooner they are planted.



Good stuff.

I just wanted to make one comment about planting date. I kept moving up my planting date.......until one year, the crop got a great start........and was really growing, then we had one of those sudden 60 degree temp swings in April. It didn't kill the oats...........but it killed off a lot of the tillers.........and the plant had to start over, and they just never really recovered. That year was a failure.

But I realize our environments are quite different. And we just grow oats for forage grazing or haying.
