2 acres per cow on $400 rent ground is $800 for summer feed only. $800 buys a lot of hay but according to most on here drylot cows don't work.


Ground that rents for $400/acre will support twice that stocking rate *here* but that type of ground is usually pretty flat and black so not sure I'd convert it to grass as in wet times could get pretty puggy. Here the pretty marginal crop ground that rents for $150-$200/acre would support 2 acres per cow in most cases with some managed grazing. The kicker though is that first year of planting grass hurts since you'll get 50% of normal production at best planting cool season grasses.
