Chebanse, IL.....

I think the "fast clocks" you describe is fairly common with generators. I thought it had something to do with the Hertz (HZ) delivered by generator/alternators.

But, to the OP's original question.....like a couple others in this thread, I'd recommend an auto-start stand-by generator. They seem about 99% trouble free. I'm not sure they make dual fuel models, but LP seems to be the main choice if you can have a tank, but keep in mind it needs to be refilled. NG works fine too. The peace of mind that comes with a stand-by unit is really nice. When you're at Louisville enjoying the tractor pull and the wife calls from 500 miles away and says a snow storm just knocked out the power & no one knows for how long......uh-oh. Never mind, when power goes out & 10 seconds later the stand-by comes on, wife won't have to bother you @ the NFMS. This is just one example. It could be 0 degrees F and 50 mph winds with heavy snow. Power goes out. You have to realize linemen aren't going to be there in an instant. House will get cold pretty fast then.

Look into a stand-by. As far as I'm concerned, if you have one installed and it costs $10K, then you just increased the value of your home $10K. Ours are approaching 20 yrs old and work just fine. I would expect a 50 yr life on them if they continue to perform.
