Single axle semi and an ice road doesn't concern me much. You will need to run good tires and an Allison automatic would be the best choice in my opinion. The biggest concern I have is stopping on a snow for longer than 5 minutes after you have run several miles. Rear tires melt in a nice semi circle that is impossible to get out of without a little sand or nudge or digging.

The reason ice road doesn't concern me much is I never run in 4wd pulling a trailer on a ice road. When a 4wd breaks traction and they can, you just lost all directional control and the trailer determines where you are going. I might use 4wd to start moving but turn it off once I am rolling. If you are in 2wd and pickup breaks loose, you just let off the gas and everything straightens up.
