What's the value of 160 acres of land in Iowa? If you sold the land and invested the money @ 4% you could earn over $100,000/yr. Or rent out the 150 acres - probably $400/ac rent and you'd get $60,000 and still raise a few head on the 10 acres. A lot of guys would love to buy feeder cattle at a reasonable price, but aren't willing to buy them at current prices. It's a risk/reward thing. If you change the premise to include a farmer that has 160 acres but doesn't have much for equity (huge mortgage), then putting it all at risk by taking out a big operating loan to buy livestock isn't such a risky proposition.
