You sure it's a Cobett?
My Cobett does not have a riser pipe, there is nothing for the float to wedge against, the only way it would overflow would be if the valve failed (or I suppose if a cow pressed down on the float and held it down long enough).
The only thing in the trough is the float, with a cord attached that leads down to the float at the bottom of the trough.
