Subject: Growing oats, good oats

Plan on raising some oats next year to diversify our rotation and to plant a grazing and nitrogen fixing mix after the oats are off. Have recently only raised oats for silage and the last time i was around oats for grain was about 15 years ago with great grandpa, a lot has changed since then. What can I do to set myself up for success? Put out 1.5 Ton of litter this fall and will spread bedpack cattle manure before seeding in the spring. Field has been corn for 3 years prior, took all the stalks off for bedding this fall. Havent used dry fert for a few years now and would like to keep it that way, would prefer liquid of whatever sort. By no means do I expect 150 bushel oats, 100 bushel would be nice. Northeast corner of Iowa
