I've been spraying since the mid 70's and have seen a lot of guys come and go on spraying. The biggest mistake I see is spending too much on the sprayer and going cheap on the logistics to support it. I also think one of the best attributes of having a sprayer is being able to apply chemicals at the best time to get the best results. Lets say you get a sprayer with an 80' boom which would be the bare minimum and you run 10 mph spraying at 20 gallons per acre. With turning on the ends and what not you'll be going thru 1800 gallons an hour. So you have to get that out in the field. If you're nursed then you'll need two people. If you want to buy chemicals cheap then you'll need mixing and rinsing equipment and so on and so forth. These things take more than just money to sort out and what works for one doesn't necessarily work for everyone.
Spot on! Doesn't matter the make, width, or tank capacity if you're limited in tendering it. That's the thing overlooked: custom application isn't just the spraying, you're also getting the manpower and logistics. |
