Subject: RE: Custom Feed Mill pricing question

Maryland
We have a custom layer feed made and pelleted for our breeding hens from a local mill. I make all of our chick starter, grower, and developer rations here at the farm, as well as cattle/pig feeds, but we prefer to feed a pellet to the laying hens. I'm only aware of two of the mills around us that have pellet machines and they typically want 3-ton minimum orders. I'm not sure how many tons you are feeding per week. Around here in the summer, I try to keep the feed under 3 weeks old. In the winter I can stretch that a lot longer, but feed degrades with age. Around here no mill will allow you to bring in ingredients other than grains. Too many potential risks/liabilities involved.

I'm still planning on getting a pellet mill someday but for now I'm very happy with what our local mill is producing for us.
