Subject: RE: FROZE Definition

Eastern NE KS
What's this some sort of pizz'n match?

The point oldtiger is making an 1-2" layer of ice at the top of a Cobett waterer does not disable the waterer. It does require someone to break the ice if the cows do not. This means, to me, the waterer requires a daily check when weather is below freezing. Compared to a pond, the ice thinkness is much thinner due to the heat well and ground warmed water.

Like oldtiger says, cracking the thin ice allows the cows to drink. I spoke to Mr. Cobett. He claimed ice removal is not required because it will melt as warm water enters the reservoir.

In my eyes and for my environment, the Cobett waterer is one of 2 or maybe 3 designs fitting for a location without available electricity. A pizzer design is #2. A small well and cow driven nose pump waterer is a #3.l (Listed in no particular order). My darn high cold weather maintenance Ritchie energy-free waterer is a poor but obviously functional #4. It been in used for 30 years. During the colds of our cold (below 0*F), I carry 5 gallons of heated water to unfreeze it for the day's thirst.
