Eastern NE KS | I have come to believe energy-free waterers depend on ground heat from 2 sources.
1. The heat well under the waterer
2. Fresh (ground heated) water brought into the waterer by animal drinking activity.
So at some point, you have to have animal drinking water that is approaching the freezing point to obtain fresh warmer water into the reservoir of the drinker. A large(r) number of cows drinking through the cold period will keep it working ice free.
Cows like to drink in groups and for me there can be hours say 12am to 8am with no consumption. It is going to freeze to some point. Sometimes adding more cattle makes all the difference. | |
