Call me crazy… seems like the perfect time to keep heifers. Sure they are expensive but if you are keeping home raised heifers odds are you have a good program. I can trade a cull out for a decent price while adding a young cow. Cattle prices will go down.. maybe add a few mature cows then but you have yearly expenses, easier to keep a few back now then if we head to break even.

Even now you can “depreciate and opportunity cost” a heifer out of profit… so I don’t buy that argument.

Sometimes when folks are going to one side of the boat you need to walk to the opposite side. I kept back extra heifers last year… averaged out with some cows leaving the herd… I’m gonna keep back every one I can again

There was some discussions in market talk about being debt free and what not. I have every intention of staying in the beef business. Sometimes you have to bet on the come. Not everyone in the beef business is nearing retirement age….
