| Nice alley there, if running waspy, ringy cows I like to have alley sheeted higher as they run better. However for yearlings, calves I like it lower. I wouldn't have a problem cutting that top section out. However, I would only do the side that your normally work down first to see if you really like it. So if it is the left side if you then you group cattle in to vaccinate in alley just try cutting that side out first. However you might want to raise that pipe up some. In the event a animal jumps up you don't want to pin your arm in and get hurt. It all depends on the height of people working the alley.
If it was my alley I would like to add a second gate latch on the bigger side gate. Over time, 20-40 years cattle will push on the opening side and tweak it a little. I would keep just one latch on the palp gate, if you normally use a palp gate. Only time we use a palp gate is when semen testing bulls, we preg through side of chute.
We are at the point we need a new alley at home place. Our old Powdwer River Classic alley is getting tired, been in use for over 40 or 50 years not sure. Been moved twice at home ranch, in different spots. It was built in the day of shorter cattle, we need a taller side alley. But it's served us well. I wonder if we have any warranty left in it? | |
