The sad truth is no 5 year old should even be thinking or knowing they could/would/should get paid. That's on the grandad for not raising his son better, because that attitude came from dad/mom, just like you said.
I pay my grandson for working, started when he was 4. He has went to work with me every day, starting when he was 3. One day we stopped at Walmart to pick something up, he wanted to walk through the toy section. As any kid , he was asking for this or that, I told him "No you have enough of xyz, you don't need any more."
He replied, "well if you paid me for working, I could use my own money to buy it."
He has earned enough of his own money (5 years old), to buy a motorcycle ($400), which he has sold ($1200) (with my help) and bought a better one, which he has now traded for a new one ($3,000). He is excellent help, and can operate any machine from a zero turn lawn mower, skid steer, excavator, fork lift, scissor lift, boom lift, he just turned 7, man do I miss him when he is in school.
