I think it just depends on the kid as to how long you let it go on. Some figure it out pretty early on and others pretend to believe for quite a while.
Depends on the kid too. Our oldest (now 18) started expressing some doubt fairly early on. We just told him that only kids that believe get presents from Santa, so to this day he still believes… or at least that’s what he says when his 6 year old sister asks him about it.
