Central Minnesota

TooDeep - 12/23/2025 21:02 Tiling on our farm has required lift stations. Gravity flow would be great, but there are not any coulees or creeks with proper drop nearby to use. I am interested in how county mains work. On Ag Talk I have read posts from farmers hooking on to county mains. What diameter are these mains? How can they be sized large enough for future added acres? How long are the mains you are using? Is land that isn’t tied into the county main still assessed for its installation and maintenance? Once a main is kinda maxed out, I would think adding more acres could cause hard feelings and problems. Are there instances where a parallel main is installed later? I am interested in any experiences you all might share. Merry Christmas to all.

Not exactly sure how it works here in Minnesota, but I think most county mains are hooked into county drainage ditches.  I am guessing most county ditches were installed before at least 1970.  I remembered Dad going to ditch meetings and  lots of arguing and law work which farmers wanted it and which ones didn't want it. I believe you were assessed benefits if your land was in watershed and damages if it went through property. And if your land was in watershed you could request outlet and tile would be brought to property line. All assessed on  cost and benefits.   Now if there is expenses on county ditch system you are assessed based on watershed. That's all I have other then water's for fighting. Both to get it and get rid of it.
