I'm wondering if you could fashion a "basket" out of hardware cloth or similar for your spuds? Maybe even an old license plate or something. Fasten it to the manifold in the current location with baling wire. In summer I'd be concerned about the fire hazard from losing hot potatoes in a dry hayfield.

And for the guys heating canned soup, pork and beans, etc. Do you poke a hole in the can to relieve pressure?
