A veteran pilot would hardly think all that through let alone a very part-time pilot.




A veteran pilot would have absolutely thought that all through. They had 20+ minutes of flight time, that’s a lot of time to think. Guys with a lot of Citation time and training can fly them like an aerobat, cutting power and learning what you can and can’t do is near the top of the list of things they train on.

This is my (probably unpopular) opinion, but I can’t help but think part of the reason they didn’t declare an emergency, level off, and head for a bigger airport is because the PIC probably knew that after landing the FAA would likely ask some really uncomfortable questions about why they were single pilot in a two pilot plane.
