Well, the cold facts?   I believe the final airspeed recorded before impact was 97 knots.   So, consider how things would work if you left the highway at 112 mph and hit an embankment, in a vehicle that has no suspension, steel frame, airbags, etc. meant to cushion the occupants in a collision like most modern automotive machinery has.  

Doubly tragic how close they were to making it.   Just a few feet more altitude or a few more knots in the bag would have gotten them to the runway.
