If you have really abrupt soil type changes, the combine yield map will not show just how abrupt the yield difference was.   That is due to how the crop flows through the combine and head width when going across soil types at an angle. 

We have ground where the soil type changes are so abrupt that you literally can go from 150+ bpa corn to sub 50 bpa corn in a couple feet.   This is very visible and matches up nearly perfect with soil type maps.   Nothing man made caused it, just how the soil was deposited naturally.  



Adjusting Flow Delay in the combine monitor and/or in the software you use to cleanup yield data should get this to line up pretty close. I prefer to use imagery to create the zones and then use yield data to set yield goals per zone with interpolation. This eliminates part of the weakness of yield data machine limitations. If you run a 12 row head and are in the 50 bu/ac area on half of it and 150 on the other half you will get an average of both. Your fertilizer spreader will do the same thing, but will be whatever rate the center of the machine is on and could bounce back and forth between 2 rates. That is a machine limitation we have to live with at this time.

If all your soils maps actually line up with productivity you are the exception. SURGO soils maps were never designed to be used at the field level. Web Soil Survey used to pop up a disclaimer that stated this. Usually soils alone are not our only limiting factor. It is usually water, either too much or too little. A depression in a great soil may still have reduced yield if not properly drained. A depression in a light sandy soil my hold enough extra water to not be affected as bad as surrounding parts of the same soil.
