I came across this book:
Greater than kings: Ukrainian pioneer settlement in Canada
It looks like it's out of print but still available from sources like eBay and others. It covers the period from 1891 to 1920. I don't recall reading about it in that book but there was a very dark chapter in the Ukrainians and their treatment by Canada. There are still a few memorials standing in SK, that testify to the Ukrainians being rounded up and sent to segregation/labor camps during what we now call WWI. Labor shortages prompted English businessmen of the area to use the cheap labor afforded by residents of the camps, for their profit.

I'll pass that info on to my daughter. My maternal grandparents were here in the early 1900's I think.
