Iowa | It was a job in itself just staying alive in those days.
Ya ever watch a deer herd when it gets Cold late in the winter time??? Like 0 degrees highs, -20 degrees lows? Bed to Food, Food to Bed. The bare essentials. Always bedding out of the wind in the conifers. Always bedding on the sunny side of a slope or a ridge.
Terrain was everything. I imagine the natives tried to set up their tee pees out of the wind as much as possible. And a well lit fire inside. And hopefully enough buffalo killed late in the summer into the fall the sustain them in the winter time. Im sure they still had to hunt to sustain in the winter.
One things for sure they weren't striking camp much in the dead of winter that would have been a death sentence. | |
