Cleveland, MS. Own small farm near Booneville, MS
By comparison I guess my ancestors had it pretty easy. My nephew has done a great deal of genealogical research. The earliest ancestor we know for sure came from Ireland and settled in Virginia. He had a son who fought in the Revolutionary War. His pay was a land grant in Georgia. His grandson, Charles, fought in the Civil War. After that the family moved west. Charles’ son, John, my grandfather, settled in what became Prentiss County, Mississippi. I’ve since wished that he had kept going a few miles farther and settled on some of that rich Iowa and Illinois soil that washed down via the Mississippi River. Instead, we got that thin, red clay hill country dirt where you have to sit on a sack of fertilizer to raise an umbrella.
