Sac & Story county IA | I read the books by Wilhelm Moberg about Swedish immigrants. That is about what my ancestors did. The books were made into a movie in 1971. I watched that, too but the books were better.
There was definitely some artistic license taken in both. Dramatic. I am sure all the things happened to someone. Just not all things to the 8 or so characters.
What my question has been is how they made it through the first winter? Before they raised any crop or had time to make shelter. Most of the old stories I have heard is somebody came and stayed with a relative. But some had to be first.
An added thought. When the 16 to 21 year old left, for their parents, it was like watching the funeral procession for their child because they knew they would never see them again.
Today, if I were to work at fast food for 25 hours, I could buy a round trip from Chicago to Europe.
