Look up Dick Proenneke, Alone In The Wilderness, not a pioneer on the prairie but from the prairie, Iowa. I believe it's on utube now, I saw it on PBS. It documents his life as he builds a cabin in Alaska and proceeds to live, mostly, on his own there for the next 30 years.
How did the pioneers make it work?
