Laura Ingalls Wilder referred in her Little House On The Prairie books to them moving into town in the winter. I've read if it happening at times in western Nebraska. Likely depended on how established a person was, at first with nothing but a shack and little to no livestock it may have been prudent to move I to town in the winter.
