How did they know which 160 was theirs?

The Public Land Survey System is how the majority of this country is laid out. Skipping some (well a lot) of the details, a section, 640 acres is 1 mile square. Cut it half each way then keep making the same cuts and you get down to part that is yours.
Ex. Nw 1/2 of a Ne corner of range ...
It does get complicated sounding

Ohio is a mess. Ohio has about 17 major survey systems and 9 minor survey systems. Then we finally decided on the PLSS.
