The homesteaders were only required to live on the Homestead for six months out of the year.
They would spend the winters in the villages.
No idea what they did for livestock feed, water or shelter?

I do not remember ever hearing of a homestead family moving to town for the winter, there were livestock to tend to, the kids did stay in town for short periods during the worse part of the winter but that was it from the stories I heard in this neck of the woods.
