I just read an article on a power outage in San Francisco. When the traffic lights go out, we're supposed to treat each intersection like a 4-way stop. But the self-driving cars were programmed to stop at intersections until they sensed a green light. So, obviously, all they did was further snarl traffic.
Of course, a quick software patch might fix that. But how many more patches are needed before a car is as proficient human driver?
Now, add mass for a truck. And maybe some hazardous materials. Does that thing belong on a public road? I think (and hope) it will be a while yet. It's one of those "Just because you can doesn't mean you should" things. And I'm generally a proponent of adopting emerging technology. | |
