Central Nebraska | Last weekend I listed a semi truck for sale on Facebook Marketplace. I've done enough business on there to know it's hit or miss on what you'll get to deal with. The truck I was selling wasn't anything special. 23 year old freightliner FLD with a 12 liter Cat engine. I fielded a few calls on Monday and then got a strange call from a New York number on Wednesday.......I'm in Nebraska. It was a friend of an earlier caller who was working nearby who wanted to look at the truck. Against my better judgement I gave him directions to get to my place and we agreed to 8:00 in the evening as I was busy in the early evening. At 8:00 a corporate looking Ram truck with a service body showed up and three young gentlemen got out of the truck. We exhcanged names, shook hands, and one got to work looking over the truck to the point I was learning about my truck. What started out as uncomfortable for me turned into an enjoyable 60 minutes. These three young men were all educated engineers working for Case New Holland in the Field Test division. They were away from their families and working out of Grand Island on combines. I was/am fascinated by what they do and how they presented and handled themselves. They then gave their buddy a glowing review of the truck and he and his father came yesterday with a money order and spent another two hours at my place. We talked about the truck for 15 minutes and then spent the rest of the time visiting about differences in crop production and farm transition. It was a very enjoyable time.
You might wonder where I'm going with this so I'll cut to the chase. I've been in golf retail, banking, IT, and even a little in the insurance world. I really enjoy visiting with people who don't do what I do and learning about what they do. There are so many ways to go about life and just because they are involved in the same industry doesn't mean their life looks anything like mine. In this situation I learned there are at least 5 good dudes that I enjoyed spending a few hours of my time with. They work in agriculture but the guys who work for CNH said they know combines in and out but wouldn't have a clue how to plant corn. The guys who bought the truck "farm" less than 120 miles from me and raise what I consider noxious weeds. |
