It's not a bad drive from PDX east along I-84. I've not done the river cruise, but I would like to. Multnomah Falls is worth the stop. Go through a couple of the dams. The old historic hotel just west of Hood River is not worth staying at. Things have gone downhill there and everywhere since Covid. As you travel east you will see layers and layers of basalt that were eroded by the Lake Missoula floods. The geological history is fascinating imo.
