I always use whatever liquid fertilizer mix I had handy. Did have some issues with the salted out particles causing issues one time with the nozzle checks and tips, but about 100 gal of hot water solved it pretty quick.
The only cast iron in my system is the pump, so i generally isolate the pump and drain the fertilizer out of it.
