Would your creation of zones for vari-rate fertilizer spreading of P or K look similar in mapping?

I don't create my own maps, but I spread with blocks vs zones. I've often wondered if the end result of lbs of product used would be the same or very similar if I switched to zones. What I have trouble with is that my blocks don't always line up with my direction of travel and the applicator will attempt rate changes in & out of the blocks. I think zones would help end that problem. But, do I pay a price by applying more product with zones?
