We considered the foil for a "fleeting second" when installing floor heat for the same reasons as everyone else--it's cheaper, much easier and quicker. But we all know you get 'one chance' with concrete. What if the foil isn't enough--and you lose heat? You could make up the additional cost of the foam (with current high energy costs--and why will they ever go down?) in a short period of time.

If you line your walls with tin, you could apply the same logic on the spray insulation. I've heard people say that R-20 with spray on will be more effective than R40 of bat, but 1 1/2" would be too skimpy for me.
