SW WI | Just abit of history. Crimea was taken by Russia from the ottoman empire. Rather from wars between Russia and Ottoman empire crimea got indepence than Russia took it over into the Russian empire. Russia gave Crimea to Ukraine. When Russia gave Crimea to Ukraine Ukraine was still part of Soviet Union. Russia also has its Black Sea fleet on the Crimea pennisula. Crimea has been a major military part of Russia.
Once the orange revolution Ukraine being independant moving in a more westward direction. Russia still had great interest in Crimea.
Also years before I believe it was Stalin which did the Russification of Crimea. Ship the native people (tatars) out and move Russians in. So Crimea has a large Russian population.
There is alot history between Russia and Ukraine.
Vladimir Putin told George W. Bush at the 2008 NATO Summit that Ukraine wasn't a real country and warned that if it joined NATO, Russia would take Crimea and Eastern Ukraine, expressing Russia's deep historical claim and opposition to NATO expansion, which foreshadowed future actions like the 2014 annexation of Crimea and the 2022 full-scale invasion.
