Considering that Trump had people working for him (Paul Manafort among others) that had been working in Ukraine to elect Pro Russian politicians, do you really think the Russians were "scared" of Trump? It's more likely they thought Trump was going to hand it to them, or they would be able to take it through election chicanery. When Trump lost, the door on that closed.
