With RTK your corrections come from a base, those corrections are either in CMR or RTCM protocol. Any RTK rover needs corrections from a suitable base. Your external receiver needs to communicate with your 500 using either NMEA or TSIP.

To answer your last question, older systems refer to all corrected signal as DGPS, as in Differential GPS. Theyll use that term to differentiate corrected vs uncorrected signal. Goes back to the days when RTK was the only corrections source, so before WAAS even.
