East Central Ia | I have struggled with this the last several years as well.
In 2024 I tried to plant a 100 acs of conventional corn to give me a taste of what to expect for weed control, yield, etc.
It was a bust and I got virtually no actionable data.
I tried to plant 3 different varieties of Epley’s along side a conventional version of a Pioneer variety I was very familiar with.
All three of the Epley varieties got absolutely decimated by army worm and I had to replant the entire field.
The Pioneer had a 100% stand.
My agronomist and I decided it was the seed treatment on the Pioneer that saved it.
I consulted the Iowa State Extension agronomist for my area and he pretty much it was bad luck. I could probably do that 20 times and never have an armyworm infestation like this again.
This has made me gun shy to try more. I know a lot of guys have good success with Epley’s but it was a disaster for me. When I called to inquire about the base seed treatment I left a message with the salesman I bought from and never heard back. | |
