95 miles NW of Quitaque, TX | V8-V10 maybe getting a little late especially if something stops you from getting the N out into the soil. Remember it can take a few days to a week or so especially if in drought or near drought. Splitting is not a good management practice except it takes more time and if something slows you down it may not be the best. I think that if nitrogen is applied and the taken up by the plants is the best method and least wasteful for the nitrogen applied. The split rates may change slightly year to year.

Corn Vegetative (V) Stages & Nitrogen Needs
VE (Emergence): First leaf appears. Seed reserves feed the plant.
V1-V3: First few leaves show collars. Plant transitions to nodal roots; photosynthesis starts. N needed, but less critical than later stages.
V4-V6 (Critical Phase): Growing point rises above soil. Peak N uptake begins, kernel row number determined. Applying N here is vital for yield.
V7-V(n): Rapid growth, fast increase in N demand. Nitrogen applied now supports substantial yield.
VT (Tasseling): Tassel emerges. Transition to reproductive phase. Maximum N uptake occurs, but by this point, most N should have been applied. |
