Michigan | Very interesting, thanks for posting. With modern materials, lubricants, and machining technology we should be able to produce vehicle engines that easily last 500k miles and instead we're going the other direction in regard to longevity. I'd like to see someone do the environmental impact analysis on how much is really saved by "innovations" like a variable displacement oil pumps when these engines grenade at 100k miles and get sent to the scrap pile. It takes a lot of energy and materials to produce a new engine.
My wife's vehicle had a variable voltage charging system that, until I disabled it, sent several expensive batteries to an early grave. That system couldn't have been saving more than a hundredth of a mpg point and producing lead acid batteries isn't exactly the most environmentally friendly activity. Same thing applies to the super low viscosity oils being used in modern engines. | |
