You are starting to show some sanity with a 79 Ford pick. My son worked over a couple of them. Cummins power, 5 speeds. Seats out of newer Super Duties but still lacked such things as good air and heat, noise level low enough to carry on normal conversation. His last one was a crew cab but it was very crude compared to a 2000+ crew cab.

The only hard part about a later super reliable Ford is finding a nice one yet (no rust, not beat up, etc.). My pick if staying with a gas motor would be a 2008-2010 F250/350 with a V10. Just buy it and drive it. Put plugs and coils in it every 90-100k.
