Middlesex County, Ontario | - A Trimble 500's RTCM capabilities are limited to RTCM v2. RTCM v2 has an accuracy limit of about 1 meter. Inch accuracy with RTCM requires RTCM v3 which the Trimble 500 is not capable of.
- If you want inch accuracy using the internal receiver then the correction data must be in CMR format.
- This is unfortunate as CMR is a Trimble Protocol. Basically every base station is capable of RTCM v3. They did that to lock you to using a Trimble base station.
- If you want inch accuracy using an external receiver, then the external receiver must use TSIP protocol.
- This is unfortunate as TSIP is a Trimble protocol. Basically every GNSS receiver is capable of outputting NMEA. They did that to lock you to using a Trimble receiver. The only Trimble monitor that will autosteer on NMEA is the original EZ Guide Plus, and it will only do that on 5 hz with EZ steer which is not great. Everything later has you locked in to their receivers for autosteer.
- The 252 and 262 receivers (and 500's internal receiver) will only accept corrections data in CMR/CMR+ format. Everything after that will at least accept RTCM v3 correction data.
If you are looking into the lower cost DIY type projects then
- None of the GNSS receivers support TSIP, they all use NMEA. Basically nothing except Trimble stuff supports TSIP. You're not going to find a how-to guide for building your own low cost TSIP capable external receiver to use with your Trimble 500. A guy or two has written code to convert NMEA to TSIP on the fly which allowed them use a few hundred dollar GNSS receiver with their Trimble 500, but that code is not shared and not fully fleshed out.
- Some of the GNSS receivers support CMR/CMR+, but no open source base station supports broadcasting CMR/CMR+. You're not going to find a how-to guide for building your own low cost CMR/CMR+ base station.
- Basically the only way you are going to apply any of those DIY projects is if you are using a later model TSIP receiver like a 372, then you could build your own RTCM v3 base station.
