Faunsdale, AL | That long series cable under the floorboard was not a feature of all of them. Some 20 series had two short cables that were each bonded to the frame. It may have been changed or updated over the years.
Personally I like the two 12’s in parallel, but it’s basically 6 of one vs half dozen of the other. Might get a 100 more CCA with the two 12 V. 12’s in parallel seems to be the way everything from tractors to heavy trucks has gone.
Check the gear reduction starter will actually bolt up. I’ve never worked on a 4010 but some the 1969-72 4020’s have a low intake manifold. The little ISKRA planetary gear reduction will fit those. Or you can take a chance on a knock-off 27MT Delco that are readily available. I don’t know which Denso starter people use, but Deere offers some that are used in later tractors I think.
It’s a great time to evaluate your battery boxes and consider a change to a single group 31. New battery boxes (for the 20 series at least) are expensive!
Some of the new steps with a hand rail look like they could be adapted to include a battery box or just make one that bolts to frame rail along side engine/starter.
Cheaper, better battery, and can use stud terminal type and have less corrosion troubles. I bought a cheap crimper and many times I can cut the old corroded lead clamps off the old cables and crimp on new ring terminals and save buying a set of new cables. The single battery allows shorter cables and it simplifies putting in a battery disconnect.
